Thun Library Closure [Updated]

Due to emergency maintenance the Thun Library & Commons will be closed until further notice.

The detection of suspected mold last week in some books in the Thun Library on the campus of Penn State Berks has caused a temporary closure of the facility as University Environmental Health and Safety officials and an outside firm look into the issue.

No samples from the library have yet been taken or tested to confirm the official presence of mold, but after what was believed to be mold was detected in books in the Special Collections and Archives sections of the library, the facility was closed and a remediation firm was contracted. The firm will test to determine if mold is in fact present and to remediate the issue. The campus also has hired an environmental testing firm to perform air and surface wipe samples after the remediation firm conducts its work.

None of the books suspected to have mold have been allowed in circulation. The possible presence of mold in books can occur when humidity in the facility is not adequately controlled. Thun Library is undergoing a thorough evaluation, including the ventilation system.  University Library Preservation and Restoration Services is also involved in providing guidance on cleaning the affected books.

Officials said the work is being conducted as quickly as possible to get the library back on line for campus use.  No timeline has been given.

To keep up to date on the building closure please visit https://libraries.psu.edu/berks.

Facilities normally housed in the library have been relocated across campus as follows:

The IT Student Helpdesk is being relocated to Gaige for the remainder of this week.

CLT staff are using Gaige 311 as their temporary office this week.

Despite the Thun Library closure there is still research assistance available!  Ask a Librarian chat and email services are available online here:  https://libraries.psu.edu/ask

The Thun Library Research Coaches will also be on campus to help! Brett and Alex will be available for in-person, drop in research assistance at the Writing Center in Franco from 10:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday. We will be open Fridays from 9-6 for walk-in tutoring help until the library re-opens. If you would like to set up a specific time to meet, please email dbs21@psu.edu and aec67@psu.edu to schedule a consultation.

The closing of the library has impacted the availability of our Media Commons editing facilities, One Button Studio, Whisper Room, borrowing of cameras and equipment, and availability of our Media Commons Help Desk. Please consult your professor if this affects a current project.

Circulation, Course Reserves, Interlibrary Loan and Media Commons resources have moved to end of the hallway in Gaige opposite the engineering lab. Like Harry Potter we are housed beneath the stairwell (Z103).
