The Science of Location: Understanding data to better serve our world
With the speed of the internet, digital information, Google Earth, crowdsourcing, and remote sensing, there is an explosion of information that we can use to better understand trends and patterns in society.
Come and be a part of this new cutting-edge technology! In this camp, you will be introduced to ArcOnline, a technology used by scientists in a variety of industrial, governmental and scientific fields. Also known as GeoSpatial technology, you’ll see how data is tied to locations and applied to games like Pokemon Go.
Participants will focus on different ways businesses analyze and use this information by working on the types of projects below:
- Analyze the Environment--study a stream or set up emergency evacuation routes in the wake of a hurricane, track a virus as it spreads across the U.S.
- Safety and Emergency management--assist police in analyzing crime patterns of a city, setting up an evacuation route in a natural disaster, investigate credit card fraud
- Business and Marketing--determine the best location for a new business, where to market for a new product.
This camp will not be contained to just the indoors, but also include going outside to use Survey123 to collect and analyze environmental data from a nearby river and playing a modernized game of hide-and-seek called geocaching.
Activities described are general topics and are subject to change at the instructor’s discretion.
