Volume 4, Fall 2015: Contributors*

Contributors

Valentina Barrera Vasco is a student at The George Washington University pursuing a degree in Human Services and Social Justice with a minor in Psychology and French. Valentina hopes to further her commitment to powerful community service through her new role as an engageDC cohort leader at the university?s Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service. 

Jedidiah Barton is a student at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He will graduate in 2017 with a BS in Biopsychology and hopes to attend medical school to pursue a MD and MPH combined degree.

Jazmyn Battie graduated from the University of Cincinnati in May 2015  with a BA in Psychology, and a BS in Psychology and Criminal Justice, with a minor in Forensic Populations. Jazmyn has been a facilitator for many organizations that focus on leadership with first year students. She plans to attend graduate school to pursue a PhD in Correctional Psychology.

Saskia Berrios-Thomas is a junior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Social Work and minoring in Economics, with a certificate in Public and Professional Writing. Saskia has completed several independent research projects on sexual assault prevention, and many of her volunteer efforts focus on this area. Upon graduation, she plans to obtain a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public Administration to pursue a career in nonprofit management.

Alice Chan graduated from Tufts University in May 2015 with a BS in Psychology. She is currently pursuing graduate studies to prepare for a career in social policy. 

Ngoc ChuNguyen graduated from the University of Cincinnati in May 2015 with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Sociology.  Ngoc is currently working as a Mental Health Specialist for St. Josephs Orphanage. She plans to attend graduate school for Clinical Psychology.  

Julia Collins graduated from Saint Joseph?s University in 2015 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Managing Human Capital. Julia has been involved in activism and research related to LGBT social issues and homelessness for several years. She is currently employed at Aramark Headquarters in Philadelphia, PA as a Human Resources Specialist in the Sports and Entertainment, Leisure, Corrections, and Business Dining sector. 

Kristen Curry attends Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA and will graduate in 2016 with a BS in Biology. She plans to attend Pharmacy school.

Anneke Doeve graduated from Belmont University in May 2015 with a BA in Social Entrepreneurship with a focus in faith, culture, and ethics. She hopes to further her education and pursue a career in social policy or public administration.

Rachel Fishman is a student at The George Washington University. She is currently undecided in her major, but she plans to continue studying fine art and to graduate in 2018. She then may pursue a career in Public Health.

Josephine Hazelton is a senior at California State University, Stanislaus studying Political Science. She was selected to spend a semester working and studying in Washington, DC as a part of the Panetta Institute for Public Policy. Josephine plans to continue studying transportation policy in graduate school. 

Naveeda Hussain is a student at the University of Toronto, Canada, and will graduate with an Honours BA in International Relations, Peace, Conflict and Justice Studies, and French in 2017. Naveeda will be interning at the Canadian Embassy in Myanmar in the winter of 2016, and hopes to pursue a career in the foreign service or in international law.

Faryal Jafri is a student at Tufts University graduating in 2018 with an International Relations major and Economics minor. She is a Tisch Scholar through the Tisch College for Citizenship and Public Service. She hopes to pursue a career in government and work on foreign policy.

Frederick Lu is a student at Tufts University and will graduate in 2018 with a BS. Frederick hopes to pursue a career in medicine.

Derek Manis is completing his MHSc in Community Health at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he also graduated with a BAHSc (Hons) in May 2015.  He intends to continue his graduate studies and obtain a PhD in Health Policy to pursue a career within academia.

Amber Michael received her BSNS from the University of Alaska Anchorage in May 2015. She became a Registered Nurse in June, began working as a Labor and Delivery Nurse in the fall, and has continued her education and community involvement in prevention and response of sexual assault. 

Emily Roberts is a senior at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She will graduate in May 2016 with a BA in Mathematics and Psychology with honors. In the fall, Emily plans to enter graduate school to pursue her PhD in biostatistics.

Sofia Sandoval is a student at the University of Pittsburgh and will graduate in 2016 with a BA in Studio Arts and a BS in Natural Sciences with a minor in French and a Conceptual Foundations of Medicine Certificate. She is currently pursuing an Art and Activism Fellowship through CitizenCity in Pittsburgh and an Artist-in-Residence at a Pitt Physics Laboratory. Sofia hopes to pursue medicine and become a reconstructive pediatric surgeon, incorporating art therapy into a combination treatment plan for her patients.

Robert Schwartz is a senior at Fairfield University, graduating in May 2016 with a BS in Biology and a BA in Music. Robert has been involved in several service projects and plans to take a year of service after graduation. Following this, he hopes to pursue a career in a music-related field.

Sahil Shah is a student at Tufts University pursuing a BS in Biology and a BA in Community Health. He will graduate in 2018, intending to pursue a career in medicine.

Madeleine Shaw is a student at The George Washington University in DC, earning a BA in Political Science and Sociology. She will graduate in 2018, and hopes to remain in DC to continue her education. Maddie plans to focus her future research on the voting habits of 18 to 24-year-olds in the United States. 

Edmund Smith graduated from Oglethorpe University in May 2015 with a BS in Biopsychology. While at Oglethorpe, Edmund was a Civic Engagement Scholar, serving as one of the key student leaders for service related events on campus and within the Atlanta community. Additionally, he served in multiple leadership capacities in other organizations including: Chi Phi Fraternity, Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity, and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honors Society. Edmund plans to attend medical school in the future and specialize in either Neurology or Oncology.

Alina Tilford graduated from the University of Cincinnati in June 2015 with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Early Childhood Education and Development. Alina has been involved in several service learning projects and she is currently a Preschool Teacher. She plans to attend graduate school to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Shane Visram is a sophomore at Tufts University studying Biology and Public Health. He plans to get an MD/MPH in the future and pursue a career in neurosurgery.

Michael Wang is a student at Tufts University and will graduate in 2017 with a BA in American Studies, Community Health, and Chinese, and a minor in Asian American Studies. Michael has been involved in several community-based non-profits in the Boston area and hopes to attend law school to pursue a JD in public interest law.

Donald Warden is a student at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia. He will graduate in 2016 with a BS in Biology and will have completed the honors program. He plans to pursue a MPH in Epidemiology.

Najya Williams is a sophomore at The George Washington University and will graduate in 2018. She aspires to make a difference and change lives by pursuing a career in Pediatric and Neonatal Medicine.

Chioma Woko is an alumna of Tufts University, who graduated with a BS in Biopsychology in 2015. Chioma is now working as a Public Health Analyst at RTI International, a healthcare research institute. Chioma has plans to pursue a career in medicine and public health in the near future.
