Michael Ecker came to Penn State Berks from Penn State Outreach at the University Park campus, where he led two domestic and international law enforcement training units. Prior to coming to Penn State, Ecker was a law enforcement officer for 24 years, retiring as the chief of police for the Halifax Area Regional Police Department. Ecker is a lifelong resident of the central Pennsylvania area, and has prior experience teaching non-credit and for-credit courses since 1999.

Ecker's research interests include adult learning principles and problem-based learning in law enforcement academy and post-academy training environments. Additional interests include full-time and part-time policing in rural law enforcement agencies.
