Freyberger Gallery presents "Art of Light"

The Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will present the exhibition Art of Light by Lyn Godley from September 4?October 16, 2014. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, September 4, at 6 p.m. Godley will also present a lecture on art, light, and its ability to help heal on Tuesday, September 16, at 7 p.m., in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium, located across from the Freyberger Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served at the opening reception.

Godley?s installations incorporate light imbedded in large-scale images, creating an environment that affects the viewer on both an aesthetic and positive psychological level. "I believe that beauty is transformative, and that works of art have the power to change lives,? explains Godley. ?Just as the need to create calls to artists, the appreciation of artistic creations has been part of the human psyche since the beginning of time.

?I believe that light has healing potential that we are only beginning to understand. Developments in light therapy are proving its ability to affect a wide range of symptoms, ranging from reducing depression and stress, changing sleep cycles, relieving pain, and increasing the rate of healing. I am convinced that we can use light to create calming environments on a physiological level, not just aesthetic.

?And I believe that, as designers, we have the responsibility to make this world a better place, to relieve suffering wherever possible."

The Freyberger Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Marilyn Fox, Gallery Director, at 610-396-6140 or via e-mail at [email protected].
