Is it possible for people to become addicted to exercise? In a culture where 70 percent of the population is overweight or obese, and yet only 15 percent exercise regularly enough to gain health benefits, why should anyone bother to study people who may exercise too much and produce detrimental consequences?
Each year, Penn State recognizes outstanding faculty and staff with annual awards in teaching and excellence. The faculty and staff awards ceremony is Wednesday, April 19.
Brenda Russell, professor of applied psychology at Penn State Berks, and Chris Staley, distinguished professor of art in the College of Arts and Architecture, are the recipients of the 2017 Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Six Penn State faculty members -- John Beale, senior lecturer of journalism in the College of Communications; Theresa Clemente, instructor of business at Penn State Wilkes-Barre; Brian Crosby, lecturer of psychology in the College of the Liberal Arts; James Lyon, professor of music in the College of Arts and Architecture; Denise Ogden, professor marketing at Penn State Lehigh Valley; and JoAnne Pumariega, instructor of mathematics and Spanish at Penn State Berks -- have received the 2017 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching.
A group of nearly 100 members of the campus and local community gathered March 29 in Penn State Berk's Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building for the unveiling of the new Fluid Discovery Lab.

Penn State Berks will hold two information sessions for the MBA program on April 12. The first will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in Room 3 of the Janssen Conference Center, while the second session will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 248 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building.
Penn State Berks students, in collaboration with Olivet Boys and Girls Club, will host a Sock Hop Prom for the residents of Country Meadows from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on April 9. The event will include various stations for the residents to enjoy, including dancing, karaoke, root beer floats, and origami corsage/boutonniere making.
Hunger has become an increasing problem across college campuses, and this year’s senior class at Penn State Berks is hoping to make a difference by establishing a food pantry on campus.
Writer and engineer Nick Arvin will discuss how professionals working in technical positions, such as engineers, can enhance their communication skills in a special presentation at 12:15 p.m. April 14 in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room at Penn State Berks. The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
