Student leader to speak at “Girl Rising” film screening on Feb. 26

The Junior League of Reading and the O'Pake Institute for Ethics, Leadership, and Public Service will present the film, "Girl Rising," on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at 7 p.m. in Francis Hall Auditorium at Alvernia University. Penn State Berks student leader Amanda Gonzalez-Ortiz will be one of the featured speakers after the film, talking about the obstacles she's overcome in pursuing her education.

Penn State's Reinvention Fund invests $100K in student sustainability projects

In October 2013, the Sustainability Institute announced its new internal grant program, The Reinvention Fund, intended to support collaborative projects by faculty, staff and students that will improve and expand sustainability efforts at Penn State. Of the more than $700,000 allocated for investment in these projects, $102,000 has been dedicated to support proposals received by student teams. Twenty-two proposals were received from interdisciplinary student teams, and 11 were selected to be funded. The funded proposals represent innovative ideas from four of Penn State's campuses -- Abington; Berks; Erie, The Behrend College; and University Park.

Penn State Berks hosts Berks County MATHCOUNTS Competition

Penn State Berks will host the Berks County MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Approximately 126 middle school students from various Berks County school districts will be on campus from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center. The students will be competing to advance to the State MATHCOUNTS Competition, which will be held March 7-8 at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey Hotel.

Study abroad presentation for students set for Feb. 5

The Penn State University Office of Global Programs will present a program on study abroad opportunities for current students at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in Room 121 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building at Penn State Berks. This program is for current students, and light refreshments will be served.

Penn State Laureate to discuss history of the Beatles

Penn State Laureate Kenneth Womack will share insights into the history of the Beatles through a multimedia presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Room 121 in the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building at Penn State Berks. The event is free and open to the public.

College hosts Global Cinema Series

This spring, as part of the Global Studies degree program's "Global Oscar Comes to Berks," Penn State Berks will present four films nominated for the 2013 Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards: Kon-Tiki on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014; War Witch on Thursday, Feb. 20; Amour on Thursday, March 20; and No, on Thursday, April 24; all at 6 p.m. in room 121 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. All four films are free and open to the public.

College hosts Martin Luther King Day banquet on Jan. 30

Penn State Berks will host a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. The event will be held in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room; doors open at 6 p.m., with a soul food dinner at 6:30. The keynote speaker is Joe Webb, Director of Student Support Services at Penn State Berks, who will share a unique presentation with the attendees. In addition, there will be several performances and awards will be presented to students who have demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and efforts towards social justice.
