Spanish in Healthcare textbooks and stethescope

Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare

Students from any major or program may sign up to take the four courses that will complete this certificate. Students from a variety of fields will find that this certificate is a useful credential for the job market, and that the skills are relevant to several professional futures.

A certificate in Spanish for Healthcare benefits students who wish to enhance their speaking, reading, writing, and translating skills to use as professionals in healthcare and human services fields.

This certificate complements many academic and professional fields such as biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, criminal justice, education, global studies, hospitality management, kinesiology, occupational therapy, psychology, science, continuing education programs, and many others.

The certificate may be completed as part of or independent from the Spanish minor.

Requirements for the Certificate in Spanish for Healthcare

Prerequisite: Courses in the certificate may be started after completing Spanish 3 (or equivalent by transfer or exam). A grade of C or better is required in all courses to complete the Certificate.

Required 12 credits of these four courses, in recommended sequence:

  1. Spanish 100B (3): Intermediate Grammar and Composition for Students in Medical-Related Fields
  2. Spanish 200 (3): Intensive Grammar and Composition, -OR- 200A (3): Intensive Grammar and Composition for Spanish Bilinguals
  3. Spanish 300B (3): Advanced Grammar and composition for Students in Medical-related Fields
  4. Spanish 412 (3): Translation

*These four courses will be offered at Penn State Berks in sequence, so that a student could complete the Certificate in two years, generally with SPAN 100B and 300B in the fall, and SPAN 200/200A and 412 in the spring.
