Berks high school students set to become ‘Senator for a Day’

Berks high school students set to become ?Senators? during student government seminar on Oct. 1

Students from six area high schools will be participating in Senator David G. Argall?s (R-Schuylkill/Berks) second-annual student government seminar at Penn State Berks on Thursday, October 1.

The event provides a unique opportunity for students to see and experience the inner-workings of the state legislature. Each student will have the opportunity to sponsor and weigh in on various legislative proposals ranging from property tax reform to education issues.

?The ?Senator for a Day? event continues to grow in popularity with students and teachers,? Argall said. ?The seminar provides students with a hands-on approach to understanding the legislative process. I?m looking forward to it.?

Similar to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, students are assigned to one of four committees ? Education, Finance, State Government and Transportation. Students will have the opportunity to lead the committee process by serving as committee chairs and other positions critical to the committee process. After the committee process, students return for a general session to debate proposals passed in the earlier meetings.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Perkins Student Center (campus map) with opening remarks from Sen. Argall and Teri Sabatelli, Director of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Penn State Berks. Students will head to their respective committee meetings at 9 a.m. General session will begin at 11:40 a.m.

Approximately 80 students from Wilson, Schuylkill Valley, Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Tulpehocken and Blue Mountain Academy are scheduled to participate in the program.

An agenda can be found on Senator Argall?s website.  For more information, contact Jon Hopcraft at 717-787-2637.
