Freyberger Gallery celebrates Day of the Dead with presentation

The Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will celebrate the Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday devoted to honoring deceased ancestors, with a special presentation on Monday, November 2, 2015, at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Cesar Garza Martinez, Associate Professor of Mathematics, and Marilyn Fox, Freyberger Gallery Director, are the co-curators of this event. Martinez will give a presentation on Dia de los Muertos, which focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember loved ones and help support their spiritual journey. Attendees are invited to talk about the deceased, as is the tradition in Mexico. In addition, traditional Mexican foods and a chocolate beverage will be served.

Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ?ofrendas,? as well as honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and their favorite foods and beverages, and visiting graves with these gifts.

The Freyberger Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Marilyn Fox, Gallery Director, at 610-396-6140 or via e-mail at [email protected].
