Faculty member recognized for teaching excellence

James Shankweiler, Lecturer in Business, was honored with the Outstanding Full-Time Teacher Award. In the nomination letter, it stated: ?
Jim strives to engage his students in projects that will further their learning through application and synthesis while also serving the community. When asked what helped them learn in the class, student comments included, ?Professor Shankweiler's amazing ability to teach with real-world examples.?? Another faculty member described Shankweiler as dedicated to student learning and growth. This award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has worked at the college for at least three years and has demonstrated exceptional commitment to teaching.

Part-time faculty member receives outstanding teaching award
Jill Felker, Instructor in Chemistry, received the Outstanding Part-Time Teaching Award. One student commented, "I really liked that this instructor has had a lot of hands-on experience in the field. She shared quite a few stories about jobs that she has had, or personal experiences, which made the course seem extremely relevant and necessary. It really tied the material to the "real world." This award recognizes a part-time faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to students and effectiveness of instruction that exceeds normal expectations.

Faculty member recognized for outstanding research

Dr. Eric Lindsey,
Associate Professor of Applied Psychology, was honored with the Outstanding Research Award. His research focuses on issues in applied family psychology, with an emphasis on connections between marital relationships, parent-child relationships, and children's social competence with peers. He also conducts research examining how the home and school environment interact to influence children's adjustment. His research has received funding from the Department of Health and Human Services. He has published a total of 32 articles, most of them as primary or co-author; three book chapters; and six encyclopedia entries. This award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in academic research, creative activity, scholarship, and mastery of a special subject.

Faculty member recognized for outstanding advising
Dr. Maureen Dunbar, Associate Professor of Biology, received the Outstanding Advising Award. She currently serves as program coordinator of both the Biology program and the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program. The students describe Dunbar as a "very caring adviser who walks students not only through the requirements of the academic program but offers valuable advice for a long-term career." Another student commented, "Dr. Dunbar is an outstanding adviser." This award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has worked at the college for at least three years and has demonstrated exceptional commitment to students.

Faculty member recognized for outstanding service
Jenifer Shannon, Lecturer in Engineering, was honored with the Outstanding Service Award. Her division head stated, ?Jenifer has provided an exceptional level of service to our engineering program, from recruiting students and serving in New Student Orientation, to serving as College Contact and Referral Representative for the College of Engineering and coordinating schedules for all engineering courses. She is also involved in outreach activities and serves on a number of committees for the division, the college, and the University.? This award recognizes a full-time faculty member who has worked at the college for at least three years and has demonstrated exceptional commitment to community service.

Police Sergeant receives Outstanding Staff Award
Kevin Rudy, Chief of Police Services, received the Outstanding Staff Member Award. In his letter of nomination, it stated: ?He cares to a point that takes ?above and beyond? to a new standard. He works very hard to relate to students from diverse backgrounds and to encourage them in an effective manner. He has handled situations above the call of duty, like notifying a student of a parent's sudden passing. He is well respected and liked by faculty, staff, and students alike, as well as members of the surrounding community.? This award recognizes a full-time staff member who has demonstrated excellence. Individuals are nominated by the college and selected by a committee.
