Math Faculty Share Online Course Project at Regional Event

Two math faculty members from Penn State Berks, along with staff members from the Center for Learning & Teaching (CLT), shared details of their team project at a regional event held on March 28, 2014, at Penn State Lehigh Valley titled Teaching and Learning with Technology 101. The workshop was attended by faculty and staff from University Park and the eastern campuses who share an interest in innovation in teaching and learning.

JoAnne B. Pumariega, Instructor in Mathematics and Spanish, and Selvi Jagadesan, Lecturer in Mathematics, are partnering with the CLT team to design and develop online versions of Math 21 and Math 22. The course options will be available to students beginning in summer 2014.

The duo shared their process and progress in a multifaceted project to create introductory level online math courses. To become familiar with online course design, Pumariega and Jagadesan enrolled in the Berks eLearning Academy, a faculty development program offered through the Berks CLT. Throughout the cohort-based program, they worked closely with Amy Roche, Instructional Designer, to become familiar with pedagogical strategies for online course design. They took advantage of the program?s follow-up options to partner with Mary Ann Mengel, Instructional Multimedia Designer, to explore strategies and methods for creating custom multimedia-based instructional resources to support their courses.
