Shank publishes first book written on interactive open educational resources

John Shank, Instructional Design Librarian at Penn State Berks, has written the first book on interactive open educational resources. An invaluable tool for college faculty and students?as well as high school teachers?the book titled Interactive Open Educational Resources: A Guide to Finding, Choosing, and Using What's Out There to Transform College Teaching was published by JB, a division of Wiley. There will be a book signing event in the college Bookstore on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, from 4?6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Sponsored by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), this one-of-a-kind book demonstrates the best tools, resources, and techniques for discovering, selecting, and integrating interactive open educational resources (OERs) into the teaching and learning process. Shank examines many of the best repositories and digital library websites for finding high quality materials, explaining in depth the best practices for effectively searching these repositories and the various methods for evaluating, selecting, and integrating the resources into the instructor?s curriculum and course assignments, as well as the institution?s learning management system.

Shank?s responsibilities include teaching, administration, research, and service. His research interests include the role, use, and impact of instructional technologies in higher education and academic libraries. Shank is currently the Acting Head of the Boscov-Lakin Information Commons and Thun Library, as well as an Instructor in Communication Arts and Sciences at Penn State Berks. He has also authored and coauthored a book, book chapters, and articles that focus on library and CMS/LMS integration, learning objects (digital learning materials), and the development of instructional design librarian positions.
