Penn State Berks students enrolled in the honors course Communicating Health in South Africa will travel with their professor, Dr. Holly Ryan, to Johannesburg from March 7?16, 2014, as part of the course curriculum to study issues of health and health communication.
According to Ryan, Assistant Professor of English and Coordinator of the Writing Center, the field experience will combine educational tourism with volunteer work. The students will work with a nonprofit organization whose mission is to assist mothers and children with HIV/AIDS. They will also study the ways in which health is discussed and information about health is communicated, and how culture and health communication are related in South Africa.
The group is comprised of 18 students: 16 from Penn State Berks and 2 from Penn State University Park who began their studies at Berks and are currently taking the class online. Ryan will be joined on the field experience by Dr. Cheryl Nicholas, Associate Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences.
In addition to their field work, the students will take turns blogging online about their experiences in South Africa.
