Lecture examines using case studies to engage students

The next Engineering, Business, and Computing (EBC) Division Speaker Series Presentation will feature Dr. Paul Esqueda, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Penn State Berks. He will present his seminar on "Research and Teaching in Writing Case Studies: The Case of Negotiations" on Monday November 4, 2013, from 1:00 to 2:15 p.m. in room 121, Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. This presentation is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

According to Esqueda, negotiation is a key skill in business, and using case studies is the most effective way to engage students in learning. Documenting and writing cases can be very rewarding from an instructional and research point of view. It is very important to select real-life situations and to adapt the case to serve the educational purpose. Identifying situations that can become potential case studies, preparing a case, and making it publishable material are the issues that will be addressed in this talk. Esqueda will use successful cases that have been widely used in courses and seminars to illustrate his experience.

The EBC Division Speaker Series features Penn State Berks faculty and visiting experts who conduct research on a wide variety of topics. Topics are of broad and general interest and are accessible to the non-expert.
