Penn State Berks holds Latino Forum for high school students

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn State Berks is hosting fifty juniors and seniors from local area high schools to participate in the first annual ?Latino Forum: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month? on Monday, September 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The day will begin with a welcome address by Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk and Dr. Blaine Steensland, Senior Director of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, followed by a presentation by Dr. Paul Esqueda, Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, on identity and leadership, the two main themes of the forum.

The morning sessions will include two discussions. At 10 a.m., a discussion titled ?What does it mean to be Hispanic/Latino? Questions of Identity? will be held, led by Penn State Berks faculty and staff, including Dr. Rosario Torres, Dr. Edwin Murillo, Maria Tinoco, Sterling Garcia, and students from the Latino Unity Club. A second discussion titled ?Leadership in the Hispanic Community? will be held at 11 a.m., led by Dr. Belen Rodriquez-Mourelo, Dr. Lorena Tribe, Guadelupe Kasper, and students from the Latino Unity Club.

After lunch in the Lion?s Den, students will be invited to the annual Penn State Berks Festival de Cine, featuring a documentary on Hispanic/Latinos experience in America, followed by a discussion led by Dr. Kirwin Shaffer, Dr. Rosario Torres, Dr. Elizabeth Wiggins-Lopez, and students from the Latino Unity Club.

Students from Governor Mifflin, Muhlenberg, Reading, Wilson, and Wyomissing School Districts will participate in the Latino Forum.
