Penn State Berks to host AI Week events, April 1-5

WYOMISSING, Pa. — The Penn State Berks AIMS (Artificial Intelligence, Modeling, and Simulation) Lab will celebrate AI Week with a slate of events from April 1-5. The Creative Minds AI (artificial intelligence) Challenge for high school students will be held on May 8.

Monday, April 1, 9 to 10 a.m.

Predictive and Prescriptive Analytics in Humanitarian Supply Chains: Insight from Food Bank Operations Webinar

Lauren Davis, professor in the industrial and systems engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, will discuss how natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies affect relief chain logistics and supply chain management. This event is free and open to the public. This event is co-sponsored by AI Hub. Registration is required.

Room 121 Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building

A panel of Penn State Berks students, including Rere Adeyemo, Christian Clarke, and Alina Rodriguez, will present their AI-focused research on topics such as ensemble machine learning for fairness, deep learning for image completion, and ChatGPT and critical thinking. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Creative AI Minds Challenge

Proposals for the Creative AI Minds Challenge, an event for high school students, is April 22. The challenge is open to all high school student teams who aim to make the world a better place using artificial intelligence and machine learning, regardless of their technical skills. Students are invited to showcase their creativity and ingenuity in ideating AI-based solutions to local and global problems, ranging from social issues, environmental conservation, healthcare improvements, and enhancing education to solving logistical challenges, among others.

Students will participate in the AI Designing Thinking Session on April 27, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in room 247, Gaige Business and Technology Building. The Flemming Creativity, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development Center (CEED) Center will organize the workshop and students will meet AI experts who can provide feedback and guidance. Students will also create a four-minute video and submit it by 11:59 p.m. on May 8. Selected teams will receive an invitation for the final round by May 11. The main event will be held on May 14, 6-8 p.m. at Penn State Berks. This event is sponsored by the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers.
