The Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will present "Stirring the Fire," a photographic exhibition by West Coast artist Phil Borges from Oct. 27 to Dec. 8. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. This event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
Through large-scale photographs and video, "Stirring the Fire" documents women and girls from developing countries who have broken traditional barriers of oppression and have become catalysts for change in their communities. The heroic examples set by these women enabled them to move from being victims to leaders and to speak of the universal themes of courage and human rights.
"Stirring the Fire" is a global movement towards gender equality, and a call to action through personal stories that shed light on specific gender issues worldwide. Borges has partnered with CARE, an international humanitarian organization that provides disaster relief, fights poverty, and helps to educate children around the world.
The Freyberger Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact Marilyn Fox, gallery director, at 610-396-6140 or via email at [email protected].
