The Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will present "Winter’s Essence," a joint exhibition by artists Janice Trusky and Daniel Schlenker from Jan. 19 to Feb. 23, 2017. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. This event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.
Working with materials as disparate as plates of zinc and acid, to paint and paper, Trusky's paintings and etchings retain a quality of delicacy and grace. Her abstract paintings and prints are both intuitive and meditative. She earned her MFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she focused her studies on Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and Art History. She earned her bachelor of fine arts from Kutztown University. She has also studied Renaissance art history and plein air landscape painting in Italy. Trusky is an adjunct instructor in painting and drawing at Penn State Berks and also teaches at Montgomery County Community College.
Schlenker has been the preparator for the Freyberger Gallery at Penn State Berks for the last 10 years. He is gifted in design and lighting gallery installations, and spends his free time creating ceramic sculptures and functional pieces at HillTop Studio in Leesport, Pennsylvania. Recent functional work includes table tops and bowls, but it is his exploration of metaphor and symbology in his sculpture that set him apart in the craft.
“Although Trusty and Schlenker have known each other for a short time, there is a distinct relationship in their work,” explained Marilyn Fox, Freyberger Gallery director. “Sensibilities in color, design, and form parallel each other in their explorations.”
The Freyberger Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, contact Marilyn Fox, gallery director, at 610-396-6140 or via email at [email protected].
