As part of its 60th anniversary, Penn State Berks will host a Day of Service from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26. This event is open to the campus community and friends of the college, and participants are welcome to attend all or part of the day’s activities.
The event will begin with a welcome and brief remarks by Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk at 10 a.m. in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room. Then participants choose from various service projects.
From 10:30 a.m. to noon, activities will include a clean-up of the Route 222 on- and off-ramp and the assembly of hygiene kits and sandwiches for Opportunity House and Safe Berks. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., participants will work on sorting collection items for various nonprofit organizations including Greater Berks Food Bank, Opportunity House, Safe Berks and Threads of Change.
At noon, participants can choose to aid in cleanup efforts at Country Meadows Retirement Community’s Wyomissing facility or the assembly of back-to-school kits for children served by Berks County Intermediate Unit and Opportunity House and care packages for children at Hershey Medical Center. From 1-3 p.m., cleanup efforts will be held at the Schuylkill River Trail, and from 1:30 to 3 p.m., braided dog toys will be created from upcycled college T-shirts. The toys will be donated to the Animal Rescue League. The event will conclude at 3:30 p.m. with an announcement of the day’s accomplishments.
