The primary aim of the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology (EMET) program is to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply current methods and technology to the development, design, operation, and management of electro-mechanical systems, particularly in those industries where automated systems are prevalent. The program provides a hands-on approach, with many labs and real-world experiences to supplement learning.

Skills for the Real World
The broad range of skills and the hands-on approach of the EMET curriculum provide skills that can be immediately applied to a variety of settings. EMET graduates combine the fundamental principles of both electrical and mechanical engineering to design, develop, manufacture, and test computer-controlled mechanical systems.
Students learn the fundamentals principles of both electrical and mechanical engineering. A sampling of subjects include CAD, engineering mechanics, digital electronics, microcontrollers, manufacturing PLCs, and automation.
The senior capstone project affords students an opportunity to design and implement an engineering project from initial proposal through Client demonstration. Students follow a structured design process within a project management structure. Collaboration and communication skills are used to address an industry or faculty sponsored project.
Internship Opportunities
Students may participate in internships during fall, spring, or summer semesters. Up to six credits of internship may be applied as technical electives for work performed at a local engineering or manufacturing company. Internships enable a student to apply what was learned in the classroom to a dynamic, real-world technical situation.

After Graduation
The growing application of automated systems across all sectors of business and industry has created a demand for individuals skilled in the design, application, operation, and maintenance of electromechanical systems. An inherent feature of these systems is that they incorporate electrical, electronic, mechanical, instrumentation, and control elements, and individuals working with these systems must be skilled in all of those disciplines. It is exactly these skill sets that the EMET program is designed to provide, and graduates from the program, with hands-on experience in all these technologies, are prepared immediately to perform these duties, regardless of the particular industrial sector.
The need for cross-discipline capabilities is particularly true of small and mid-sized manufacturing and production industries where technical staffs are often small and very versatile. As a result, EMET graduates are well suited for careers in such industries. Some EMET graduates fabricate and assemble equipment, design and produce prototype versions of new equipment, and work in research and development. Others work in quality control, inspecting products and processes, preparing and conducting tests and/or experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and calculating or recording results. In manufacturing environments, graduates work in product design, development, and production.
