B.S. in Kinesiology Program Goals

Program Learning Goals

Students should be capable of researching, synthesizing, analyzing and critically evaluating research knowledge and data.

  • Students will be able to use a wide variety of information retrieval services and resources to synthesize relevant research.
  • Students will be able to interpret and critically evaluate published research.
  • Students will be able to disseminate scientific knowledge.
     

Students should define the fundamental processes involved in human activity.  This involves the physiology, psychology, biomechanics, motor control, history and philosophy of human movement.

  • Students will be able to state and explain the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in Exercise Physiology.
  • Students will be able to state and explain the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in Exercise Psychology.
  • Students will be able to state and explain the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in Motor Development.
  • Students will be able to state and explain the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in Nutrition.
  • Students will be able to state and explain the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in Biomechanics.
  • Students will be able to explain and summarize the fundamentals of the field of Kinesiology in History & Philosophy of Physical Activity to Human Wellness.
  • Students will be able to explain and summarize the relationship of physical activity to human wellness.
     

Students should be able to scientifically assess physical fitness, design and prescribe physical activity programs, and inform clients of the value of physical activity.

  • Students will be able to select equipment commonly used for testing in the various specialties in the field of kinesiology.
  • Students will be able to institute and assess various standard exercise, performance, and wellness evaluations.
  • Students will design and prescribe physical activity programs.  This includes the ability to select and use computerized fitness programs.
  • Students will be able to delineate components of wellness, physical activity, fitness and performance.
     

Students will be able to define and disseminate information concerning the concepts of wellness, physical activity, fitness and performance.

  • Students will be able to clearly articulate, in written form, information relative to the discipline.
  • Students will have spoken proficiency in a public forum using various computer- and media-based resources concerning the issues of physical activity, fitness, wellness and performance.
  • Students will be able to write an article using accepted style parameters (APA).
  • Students will demonstrate proficiency in using word-processing applications.
     

Students should develop an awareness of and concern for ethics and professionalism within the discipline of kinesiology.

  • Students will be able to articulate ethical concerns and professionalism in all settings where applications of kinesiology occur.
  • Students will provide evidence of familiarity with issues related to various philosophies of exercise and athletics, and how they impact modern day kinesiological thinking.
     

Goals for Business Emphasis: 

Students should further develop an understanding of research methods and scientific literature.

  • Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge in the business skills of accounting, economics, statistics, marketing and management.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate basic knowledge in the business skills of marketing and management.
     

Goal for Science Emphasis: 

Students should further develop an understanding of research methods and scientific literature.

  • Students will demonstrate enriched knowledge of science as evidenced by a diversity of science-related courses.
