WYOMISSING, Pa. — "Engaging Perceptions: A Collaboration of Scholars and Artists" explores the relationship between academia and the arts. This upcoming exhibition in the Penn State Berks Freyberger Gallery will kick off with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, and it will run through Feb. 20. This event is free and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, a new reception date will be posted at berks.psu.edu.
The artists have accepted the challenge of creating art based on interviews with six faculty members in the college’s Division of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. During the interviews, the artists learned about the faculty members’ research and classroom curricula. The faculty members involved in the collaboration include:
- Lee Bauknight, assistant professor of English
- Samantha Kavky, associate professor of art history
- Caleb Milligan, assistant professor of digital humanities
- Jennifer Murphy, associate professor of criminal justice
- Cheryl Nichols, associate professor of communication arts and sciences
- Ebonie Stringer, assistant professor of criminal justice
Each artist applied information from the faculty member as a point of departure to generating new art in his or her chosen media. The artists include:
- Janice Trusky, artist who works in photography, painting and printmaking; adjunct instructor at Penn State Berks and Montgomery County Community College
- Kristen Woodward, award-winning painter who uses encaustic and oil; professor of art at Albright College
- David Love, painter and printmaker; instructor at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania
- Ann Lalik, metalsmith and jewelry designer; arts coordinator and instructor at Penn State Lehigh Valley
- Abbey Rosko, artist and teacher at the Baum School of Art, Allentown, Pennsylvania
- M. Camile Romig, art activist and award-winning quilt artist
- Aileen Basis, a New York-based artist who has been awarded many artist residencies, grants and fellowships
- Kathi Ember, professional illustrator of children’s books
