Faculty librarians conduct scholarly research across disciplines and with far-reaching impacts. Penn State University Libraries faculty librarians’ research is not only impactful, it is highly productive, as evidenced by a study published in the July 2023 issue of College & Research Libraries, the official, peer-reviewed scholarly research journal of the Association of College and Research Libraries.
A Penn State faculty project team has received a two-year Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant totaling $104,771 to create and host a National Forum for Privacy Literacy Standards and Competencies. The forum will be held March 10-11, 2025, at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center and online.
A new book written by Penn State Berks Professor of Latin American Studies Kirwin Shaffer explores how historical forces, people, and ideas traveled across political borders and bodies of water to shape Caribbean history. Titled "A Transnational History of the Modern Caribbean: Popular Resistance across Borders," the book discusses many of the same issues that are timely today, including same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights.
The Consortium on Substance Use and Addiction recently hosted the first annual Substance Use Disorder Stigma Reduction Summit at University Park. The event brought in researchers, practitioners and government partners from across the nation to consider research, policy and practice around the issue of stigma reduction in numerous fields like criminal justice and healthcare.
The ninth annual Losoncy Lecture in Physics and Astronomy will be presented by Ruth Daly, professor of physics at Penn State Berks. Daly will present “An Overview of Black Holes in Galaxies across the Universe," on April 9.
Doug Tieman, president and CEO of Caron Treatment Centers, and Dr. Joseph Garbely, medical director of Caron Treatment Centers, led an insightful discussion that touched on the scope of the opioid epidemic and the science of addiction.
Penn State University Libraries awarded its Undergraduate Research Award: Excellence in Information Literacy to students at nearly all undergraduate Penn State campuses in April, honoring 97 undergraduate students as well as eight graduate students participating in their respective campus-wide research exhibition events.
The eighth annual Losoncy Lecture in Physics and Astronomy will be presented by Robert Forrey, distinguished professor of physics at Penn State Berks. Forrey will present “Short Stories in Theoretical Physics Research,” which will cover topics from the 2019 prize he received from the American Physical Society. The lecture will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium.
Penn State Berks also was the only undergraduate institution to receive a Topical Collaboration Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, which funded speaker’s appointment.
