Entrepreneurship Speaker Series: Women Entrepreneurs of Berks County
Natalie Parisi Owner, Partner of ROG Orthodontics
Dr Natalie Parisi is an owner and partner at ROG Orthodontics with locations in Wyomissing, Douglassville, and Pottstown. Born and raised in Berks County, Natalie is a graduate of Holy Name HS, Villanova University, University of Maryland Dental School and Eastman School of Orthodontics- University of Rochester. An international speaker in the field of Orthodontics, Dr Nat has been a full-time orthodontist in her practice for 24 years and is an adjunct professor of orthodontics at Temple University's Kornberg School of Dentistry. She is an award-winning orthodontist, professor and community advocate in addition to being an avid Villanova basketball fan.
Lindsay Sokol Szejko Owner, CEO of SOLO Laboratories, Inc.
Lindsay graduated in 2005 from York College with BS in Criminal Justice. She joined SOLO in 2005 in the area of Customer Service. SOLO was founded by Lindsay's father Barry Sokol in 1983. From 2005-2016 Lindsay held various positions in the company from Customer Service to Sales and Marketing. 2012 Lindsay relocated with her family to Austin, Texas to gain business for SOLO and investigate potential for a 2nd location. She returned to home base of SOLO in PA in 2015 in the Sales role. She was named President in 2017 and CEO in 2018. Lindsay is currently the CEO of SOLO and works hard to keep the company on track with the same vision and mission since its founding to "Serve Others, Love Others. Lindsay currently resides in Kutztown, PA with her husband Andy, two children Sydney and Cameron, cat, Romeo and fish, Pebbles.
Alma Vasquez Owner of YAVE Investments LLC and Pagoda Café & Catering Services
Alma Vasquez came to North Carolina, United States from Mexico in 2000. She started off working as a helper at a restaurant where she later became a manger. She moved to Pennsylvania in 2008 where she still resides with her two daughters. She continued to work at small local businesses because of her love of helping the community. On the side, she started her own company where she invested in real estate, YAVE Investments LLC, to reach her own financial goals. In 2019, she achieved her dream of opening her own restaurant, Pagoda Cafe & Catering Services. Now, she has four employees and plans on opening more restaurants in the future in different cities.
Jaimyn Westenhoefer President of SOLO Laboratories, Inc.
Jaimyn started her career in the beauty industry as a licensed aesthetician and worked at a few different salons and medical spas over the course of 12 years. In 2012, SOLO had a sales position that needed to be filled, and the opportunity was offered to her. Although she enjoyed the industry she was in, Jaimyn decided to join the family business and see where that lead. The role quickly developed from sales, to customer service, to leading and organizing positive changes in the areas she was exposed to. In 2018, she was named President of the company. What she hoped to achieve every day is the example of what SOLO Labs stands for, “Serve Others, Love Others.” She currently lives in Fleetwood, PA with her family-- husband Wes, 3 kids, Jailyn 20, Evan 14, Charleigh 11, 2 dogs, 2 cats, some fish and a hamster!

Inc.U Competition
As part of Startup Week, Penn State Berk’s Team, Vytah-Fit was selected to be one of the six university wide finalists to pitch their ideas on WPSU’s “The Investment” television show on Saturday, April 6, 2019. This television show is similar to the show “Shark-Tank.” The team presented a pitch to a panel of judges for a chance to win funding for their startup. Vytah-Fit created a device that attaches to weight-lifting equipment and collects data to inform the weightlifter about their performance.
Nittany AI Challenge
On April 3, 2019, the Penn State Berks team, Resilient Resumes, was announced to be one of the top ten finalists in the Nittany AI Challenge at University Park to receive $2,000 from the Nittany AI Alliance to move their idea forward and develop a prototype. Resilient Resumes team designed a web application that walks users through the resume creation process and then use AI to help the users improve their resume. The team is comprised of three Penn State Berks students, project lead Amie Croteau, Ethan Adams, and Ian Morrissey. In addition to the team, Bryan Cruz, a junior majoring in computer science at Penn State Harrisburg also joined them. The Penn State Berks faculty advisors are Abdullah Konak, professor of IST, and Yuan Xue, assistant professor of IST.
Entrepreneurship Speaker Series
On April 3, 2019, the Flemming CEED Center hosted the Entrepreneurship Speaker Series as part of the Startup Week. The Speaker Series allow students to listen to entrepreneurs’ real-life experiences including what worked or did not work towards the success of their businesses. The panel consisted of Penn State alumni Camrin Edwards, Wedding Coordinator and Seamstress of Camrin Edwards; Ryan Morris, a student entrepreneur and co-founder of Traduki Technologies LLC; Tito Orjih, a student entrepreneur and co-founder of Trimatis LLC,; and Ernie Post, the Pennsylvania State Director of the Small Business Development Center at Kutztown University. Each panelist had a chance to give a brief summary of their entrepreneurial experiences and then the floor was opened to questions from the audience.
K-12 Creativity Workshop
Wednesday, March 27, 2019, the Flemming CEED Center hosted its bi-annual Creativity Workshop hosted by the Entrepreneurship Club. The purpose of this workshop is to inspire young children to think creatively, and ultimately develop an entrepreneurial mindset. The students were introduced to 3D printers and how they can use them to solve problems in the community. The students then practiced how to think creatively. This was accomplished through interactive PowerPoint presentations and multiple creative activities. Students were then given the chance to reflect and share what they have learned.
ENTI Minor Open House
On Wednesday, March 20, 2019, the Flemming CEED Center hosted the first Open House promoting the Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ENTI) Minor at Penn State Berks. The purpose of the open house was to inform students of the true value of the ENTI minor, while also allowing these students to mingle with other like-minded students in the same field. It also served as a congratulatory party of the graduates of Spring 2019. Each graduate was given the opportunity to share their experience within the minor and advice to those who are about to embark on the journey of entrepreneurship education.
3D Printing Workshops
On February 13, March 15, and April 8, 2019, the Entrepreneurship Club hosted three 3D Printing Workshops. The purpose of these workshops is to introduce participants to the world of 3D Printing, and how they can use 3D printed items to serve specific purposes to better everyday life or industries.
BenXchange Speaker
On Monday, March 18, 2019, Penn State Alumni, Tim Hillert of BenXchange came to talk to the Entrepreneurship Club. Tim’s talk was Q&A style, allowing students to ask him about his personal experiences and opinions about starting a business. Tim says the key to running multiple businesses for him was finding a synergy. He also stressed the importance of education, networking, and having real data to back up your claims when starting a business.
Traduki Speaker
On Monday, February 4, 2019, Ryan Morris, CEO of Traduki, came to the Flemming CEED Center to talk with the Entrepreneurship Club. Traduki is a company that brings together freelance translators with clients in need. Ryan shared his startup experience and expressed his belief in the help of Penn State in the process. One piece of advice that he wanted to leave with the students with was that networking is key. If you are not familiar with an area of expertise, then find someone who is an expert, and build a team with a diverse skillset.
Student Enterprise Award
The Flemming CEED Center's Spring 2019 Student Enterprise Award provides selected business startup teams with seed money to support enterprising and innovative students at Penn State Berks. The award is open to all Penn State Berks students as long as their project leader is a junior or senior, majoring in Engineering, Business, or Information Sciences and Technology programs. The teams first submit their business description, then submit a business plan and perform a pitch. A review committee consisting of five Penn State faculty members and a business leader will decide how the seed money will be distributed. The teams can be granted up to $3,000 total for their business startup.
Penn State Berks Idea TestLab
Flemming CEED Center hosted the second cohort of the Idea TestLab. The IdeaTestLab allows students to test the validity of their new business idea. The program lasted six weeks and had two guest speakers/mentors including Ernie Post, Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in PA; and Tim Hillert of BenXchange. Participants included three teams; Sprockety, Vytah-Fit, and Panaga. Sprockety is a company started by Penn State alumna Danielle Pritz that is focused on promoting STEM in the classroom through hands-on activities. Sprockety provides resources and materials that teachers will use as part of their STEM curriculum. Vytah-Fit, LLC is a fitness company comprised of five members, Masen Suhadolnik, Ricky Romaniello, Bradley Owens, Karl Bruhn, and Tobias Welk. Their product utilizes integrated sensors, and relies on Bluetooth connectivity to transfer weightlifting data to a mobile application. Panaga is comprised of two members; Project Lead, Dr. Yi Yang of Penn State Abington, and Dr. Xuan Liu of NJIT. The team is exploring the commercial potential of applying laser scanning technology in the field of art application.

Invent Penn State NSF I-Corps Penn State Berks Idea TestLab Fall 2018
The Flemming CEED Center Idea TestLab has been developed as part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps initiative at Penn State (The Invent Penn State NSF I-Corps Site is funded by the National Science Foundation NSF Grant No. 1735627). NSF established the program based on the Lean LaunchPad, an entrepreneurship methodology to test and develop business models based on querying and learning from customers. The business ideas presented and analyzed during the first Idea TestLab in Fall 2018, held on Wednesday evenings during the part of the fall semester, included a translation service for hospital patients, recycling plastic bottles for 3D printer filament and a personal coaching app. In accordance with the NSF guidelines, all ideas for the program must be based on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Startup teams are welcome from Penn State Berks and the surrounding communities.
Creative Programming Workshop on December 5, 2018
Penn State Berks Flemming CEED Center held its fifth Creative Game Programing Workshop for Reading School District middle school students enrolled in the Penn State Educational Partnership Program (PEPP). One of the main objectives of the program is to increase girls’ interest in careers in information technology. Students explored computational thinking concepts (sequence, loops, events, logic, operators, and data); computer science practices (working iteratively and incrementally, testing, and debugging), and program design. Then participants completed a project by designing a simple game using the Scratch programming language, designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab especially for students ages 8 to 16. Scratch has an intuitive interface and allows students to create computer programs and animations by assembling Legostyle blocks together.
STEM Idea Contest on November 28, 2018
The Flemming CEED Center organized the first STEM Idea Contest in Fall 2018. Four finalist teams, TRB-KM Smart Device, Carbon Fiber Composite Swingarm, RegiTribe, and Auto-Pooh, presented their business ideas on November 28, 2018. The finalist teams were invited to attend the Penn State Berks Flemming CEED Center Idea TestLab in Spring 2019. The objective of the STEM Business Idea Content is to increase the awareness of Entrepreneurship among our students and identify potential entrepreneurship teams in the College. The STEM Idea Contest is also a gateway to the resources of the Invent Penn State I-Corps Site.
Entrepreneurship Speaker Series on November 14, 2018
On November 14, 2018, the Flemming CEED Center hosted its bi-annual Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. The Speaker Series is dedicated to hosting entrepreneurs who speak of their experiences and key points in their entrepreneurial journey that brought them to their success.
This year the entrepreneur panel consisted of Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz of Mi Casa Su Casa Cafe, Aaron C. Gantz of Downtown Revitalization, Alan W. Shuman of Shuman Development Group, and Elliott W. Weinstein of Weinstein Realty Consultants. In the panel, speakers were driven to inspire students in developing their own ideas and how they can be safely developed. It was modeled that difficulties and success are mutually inclusive and that perseverance is an invaluable quality as an entrepreneur.
Waffatopia Speaker on November 13, 2018
Penn State Berks campus was delighted to welcome Brian Polizzi, the Co-Owner and Chief Waffatier of Waffatopia, to speak with students and faculty regarding his entrepreneurial journey. Waffatopia began in 2013, co-owned by Brian Polizzi and his wife Andrea Polizzi, who both graduated from Penn State University. They dedicate and pride themselves upon the production of the best Liège waffles. Brian explained the risky reality of being an entrepreneur in that it can be a painful yet rewarding experience. Brian recounted difficulties with unsuccessful business plans and marketing experience for Waffatopia products. There was emphasis on the value of an evolving business plan. He instilled upon students that strategy and perseverance were invaluable qualities in an entrepreneur in order to make any business idea successful.
Creativity & Entrepreneurship Workshop on November 12, 2018
The Flemming CEED Center hosted its bi-annual Creativity and Entrepreneurship Workshop for middle school students in order to promote critical thinking, creativity, and developing an entrepreneurial mindset. These students had visited the Penn State Berks campus in order to participate in this event. This event was coordinated by Dr. Sadan KulturelKonak and Dr. Abdullah Konak. Assistants to this event were the members of the Penn State Berks Entrepreneurship Club. Students were educated on the basics of 3-D printing an entrepreneurial mindset. During the workshop, mentors promoted critical thinking and creativity by giving students the opportunity to create their own pizza business. Students learned the value of a business plan, marketing, operations, and accounting in order to make their business a success.

Entrepreneurship Speaker Series on March 19, 2018
Penn State Berks hosted speaker panels comprised of successful entrepreneur George Weaver, and a staff attorney, Tyler Etter. The talks covered topics including the importance of establishing agreements with co-founders, appropriate selection and need of a business entity, as well as basic issues with employees, contractors, and intellectual property considerations. After sharing their experience, knowledge, and advice, speakers took questions from faculty, staff, and students in an informative Q&A session.

Creative Game Programming Workshop on December 6, 2017
Penn State Berks held its third Creative Game Programming Workshop for Reading School District middle school students who are enrolled in the Penn State Educational Partnership Program (PEPP). This program brought PEPP students to Penn State Berks for the day with the goal of exposing them to computational thinking and sparking an interest in computing careers, particularly among female students.

The Flemming CEED Center hosted a workshop for younger students based on promoting creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset. Students from Reading Southern Middle School were brought to Penn State Berks to participate in the workshop coordinated by Dr. Sadan Kulturel and Dr. Abdullah Konak. The Penn State Berks Entrepreneurship Club assisted by mentoring students. The workshop introduced students to 3D Printing, value creation, generating ideas, creativity and entrepreneurship in general.

On November 13th, 2017, Penn State Berks will host a guest speaker series featuring Heather Chandler and Travis Getz on the topic of “Intrapreneurship,” sharing their knowledge and insight, while engaging with students in a question-and-answer session.
Heather Chandler
President, Sealstrip Corporation
Sealstrip is a flexible packaging manufacturer of easy-open and reclosable features, located in Gilbertsville, PA. Ms. Chandler holds an undergraduate degree in Education and an MBA from Penn State, and a law degree from Temple University. She serves as Immediate past Chair of the Board of the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce, on the board of TeamPA Foundation, and the advisory councils of both Ben Franklin Technology Partners and The Delaware Family Business Center. Sealstrip has placed on the PA Best Places to Work list for 7 consecutive years and is currently ranked 6th. Ms. Chandler was also a 2010 SmartCEO "Brava" award winner, a 2013 recipient of the YWCA "Tribute to Exceptional Women", and a 2015 Honoree of Eastern PA Girl Scouts "Take the Lead." She speaks and writes on a variety of subjects, most frequently on leadership and The Intergenerational Workplace.
Travis Getz
VP of Operations, Reading Bakery Systems
A graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and US Navy veteran, Mr. Getz joined RBS in 2001 and since then has held positions of increasing responsibility including Electrical Engineer, Project Engineer, Director of Engineering. In his current position of Vice President of Operations, Travis is responsible for overseeing Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Technical Services and the Science & Innovation Center.
Debut of the Langan LaunchBox
The Langan LaunchBox had its debut on October 25, 2016, allowing the attendees to tour the new center located at Penn State Health St. Joseph’s Downtown Reading Campus. The Langan LaunchBox will be used to provide opportunities to entrepreneurs, students, and others in the Reading area. Read More

On November 2nd, 2016, The Flemming CEED Center hosted a workshop for younger students based on promoting creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset. Students from Reading Intermediate High School were brought to Penn State Berks to participate in the workshop coordinated by Dr. Sadan Kulturel and Dr. Abdullah Konak.
As an introduction to the workshop, students were shown different aspects of 3D printing. Nick Haring and Josh Mullan explained the process and answered questions dealing with 3D printing. Projects printed by Penn State students were on display during the presentation.
After learning the basics of what it means to have an entrepreneurial mindset, teams of students were tasked with creating their own pizza business. With assistance from their workshop mentors, students discussing several vital aspects of creating a business. Marketing, business plans, funding, budgeting, and operations were all covered in their attempt to create a successful pizza business. To conclude the workshop, each team was able to present their ideas to their peers.
After hearing positive feedback by those involved, another Creativity and Entrepreneurship Workshop has been scheduled for the Spring 2017 semester. The expected date for this event is March 1st, 2017. The Flemming CEED Center plans on continuing these workshops as well as similar-style events for the benefit of younger students and to build an interest in entrepreneurship.
Flemming CEED Center Open House
The Flemming CEED Center hosted an open house on November 14th, 2016. The event allowed Penn State Berks students to learn about what the Flemming CEED Center is and current/upcoming activities that are being hosted. Students that attended were able to learn more about the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Minor as well as the Entrepreneurship Student Club. Club President Josh Mullan and Vice-President Nick Haring along with Dr. Sadan Kulturel answered questions and talked with students about the ventures of the Flemming CEED Center.

On October 26th, 2016, Penn State Berks hosted a guest speaker panel comprised of three successful entrepreneurs. After hearing from Timothy Hillert, John Gatto, and Pamela Moore-O’Neill about their different paths and how they ended up as entrepreneurs, students were able to engage in a question-and-answer session, which provided insight in a more individualistic way.
Mr. Timothy Hillert, graduated from Penn State-Berks in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a focus in financial services. In addition, he also completed his Executive MBA (E-MBA) in 2014 from Smeal College of Business. While studying for his E-MBA he created a company called BenXchange. A business that provides employee benefits, all-types of insurance and retirement plans from an owner’s perspective. He brought together a team of highly trained and accomplished individuals in their respective fields to help launch this operation. During its first year in business BenXchange received the very prestigious Stevie award Bronze medal for startup of the year. Timothy has the entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to BenXchange he has acquired PetInsure.net, and Lynx Allocation Partners, which is a Registered Investment Advisory. He has also acquired over 40 specific websites which focus on all products that BenXchange offers. Timothy is grateful to Penn State for all the opportunities it has offered him.
Mr. John Gatto, a Founding Member of TAR Capital, LLC, has more than 25 years of progressively responsible manufacturing operations experience directing as many as 60 employees in companies with revenues in excess of $100 million. John has led these companies through start-up, survival, turnaround, growth and acquisition modes. As an Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Services professional, John gained expertise in diversified industries, including Oil and Gas, Energy, Off Road (including rail), Automotive, Marine, Offshore, Specialized Agriculture and Mining. Significant amongst his previous positions John held was Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer for CMR in North America for nearly 15 years. John also served as General Manager of Schroeder Industries, a Pittsburgh-based leading manufacturer of filtration and diagnostic products for the fluid power industry. John Joined Schroeder in 1987 to re-invigorate their stalled diagnostic products group and to integrate new international manufacturing partnerships. John is a 1977 graduate of Penn State Berks.
It can be said that the entertainment bug infects certain individuals early on in life and is incurable. Such is the case with Ms. Pamela Moore-O'Neill. Pam got her start in the entertainment industry at the age of 3, performing regularly on Al Alberts Showcase, an entertainment variety show broadcast on WPVI-6, Philadelphia's ABC-TV affiliate, from 1962 to 1994. A lifelong Chester County resident, Pam graduated from Downingtown High School in 1981 and attended West Chester University (then West Chester State College) on a full scholarship. She then went on to pursue her calling in entertainment, performing at local venues such as The Little Lyric and Opera Company, Three Little Bakers and The Apple Theater. Her efforts culminated on September 1, 2000, when she went on her own and founded Moore Music, which she continues to successfully operate to this day, managing a staff of 18 disc jockeys and assistants. Group Attends Talk Sponsored by the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce
