Eric Alva will tell his story of coming out as a gay man in the armed forces and his advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the workplace during a lecture titled “The End of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the Penn State Berks Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.
Penn State Berks will host its annual Unity Day celebration — the largest diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging event at the college — from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, on the Perkins Student Center lawn. This year’s theme is “Building Memories through Community.” All Unity Day activities are free and open to the public.
Penn State Berks will host Gabriel Ramirez for the “I Am Here: Affirmation as a Form of Resistance” workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. The workshop will allow participants to speak about past experiences that impacted who they are today, while learning how affirmations can be empowering in self-discovery and growth. This event is free and open to the general public.
Penn State Berks has named nearly 100 students to the summer 2023 dean’s list. To earn a dean’s list designation, students must end the semester with a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.
A team of faculty and staff at Penn State Berks have come together to form a cycling team with the ultimate goal of raising funds for pediatric cancer. The team is participating in the Great Cycling Challenge with the goal of raising at least $3,000 and riding at least 500 miles during the month of September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the United States.
Penn State Berks alumni and family members of students are invited to the college’s annual Family and Homecoming Weekend, Friday, Oct. 6, to Sunday, Oct. 8. This year’s theme is "Building Memories.” The weekend will include activities for the entire family, including social and athletic events that showcase the campus.
Prospective students and their families are invited to a visitation program at Penn State Berks at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the Perkins Student Center, located just off Broadcasting Road in Wyomissing. The event is part of the University's "Penn State Day" in which Penn State campuses throughout the state host visitation programs during the months of September and October.
Lori Hepner, the 2023-24 Penn State Laureate, will visit Penn State Berks and give a live presentation at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2. The event, which will take place in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room, is free and open to the public.
At the end of the spring 2023 semester, six Penn State Commonwealth Campuses named faculty members as Open Champions, recognizing their work with open education in the second year of Penn State’s Open and Affordable Educational Resources (OAER) Champion Awards. A collaboration between Penn State University Libraries and the University-wide OAER Working Group, the OAER Champion Award began as a pilot initiative in 2022 and seeks to recognize excellence, innovation and impact in open educational practices at Penn State campuses.
A team of Penn State researchers recently held a workshop in Ghana on how gender affects dynamics within the agriculture industry. The trip capped a multi-year effort to better understand time poverty among women peanut farmers.
