In an effort to better serve its adult student learners, Penn State Berks has launched the Adult Learner Peer Mentor Program in the fall 2022 semester. The program seeks to enhance and enrich adult education by pairing seasoned and academically successful adult learners with incoming adult students.
Leaders from around the commonwealth gathered at Penn State Berks on Friday, Aug. 26, to celebrate the dedication of the newly renovated and expanded Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center. President Neeli Bendapudi was on hand to mark the culmination of the $30 million project, which revamped the original structure into a 76,000-square-foot modern facility designed to support academic programs and recreational activities.
Two faculty members at Penn State Berks, Jennifer Murphy, associate professor and chair of the criminal justice department, and Brenda Russell, professor of psychology, had their stigma work with students showcased at Shatterproof’s Stigma of Addiction Summit earlier this summer. Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming addiction treatment, ending stigma, and supporting communities.
Penn State Berks is helping a future generation of engineering students to succeed through the college’s Engineering Ahead Program, which is now in its seventh year. The goal of the four-week summer “bridge” program, which ran from June 26 to July 22, is to increase retention rates among a diverse group of engineering students by enhancing academic preparedness and providing support.
Sarah Hartman-Caverly, reference librarian and library liaison to the division of engineering, business and computing at the Penn State Berks Thun Library, was recently invited to chair the American Library Association Intellectual Freedom Round Table Publications & Communications Committee for 2022-23.

Penn State University Health Services (UHS) is encouraging students to protect themselves against monkeypox in light of cases in Pennsylvania and nationally. Monkeypox is a viral infection primarily spread through prolonged close contact. It is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), and anybody can be at risk, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Ed Laquidara, founder and curator of Animal Adventures, New England’s largest privately owned animal rescue center of its kind, and his animal friends will visit Penn State Berks at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, on the Perkins Student Center Lawn Tent. This event is free and open to the public.
