Process Instrumentation and Control

About the Program

This online certificate program consisting of three courses is geared for individuals looking to enter or move up within the field of automation. This program will also help attendees better manage employees working in this field of technology.

Certificate Requirements

To receive the Process Instrumentation and Control Certificate and 12 Continuing Education Credits (CEU’s), participants must successfully complete the following three courses, maintain at least a "C" average (70%):

  • Sensors and Symbology – ENGR 5131
  • Control Functions – ENGR 5132
  • Installation and Engineering Functions – ENGR 5133

Career Potential

This program is built for engineers, technicians, and technologists to gain an understanding of the field of process automation. Many industries utilize automation including petrochemicals, nuclear, specialty and bulk chemicals, paints, films, power generation, automotive, breweries, rotating machinery and turbines, municipal & industrial waste incineration, coal handling, and steel.

Certificate Prerequisite

It is recommended that the course attendees come from a process industry background.

Meet the Instructor

Matt Manwiller

Matt Manwiller brings more than 28 years of experience in industrial equipment sales, application engineering, product management, operations, and material planning to his role as a Process Instrumentation and Control instructor. A Penn State graduate with degrees in Business Logistics and Business Administration, Matt was previously a Product Manager for an industrial instrumentation company, and has worked extensively with pumps, blowers, fans, heat exchangers, instrumentation, drives, and other equipment used in industrial and wastewater applications.

Throughout his career, Matt has developed technical solutions, supported equipment startups, improved processes, managed projects, and led teams serving OEMs, contractors, and end users. His hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems—combined with his background in troubleshooting, system design, product development, and customer-focused problem solving—allows him to connect classroom concepts to real-world industrial applications.

Matt also has extensive experience in the blower, pump, and wastewater industries, including equipment sizing and application, process-system design, project management, and field service. His background includes positive displacement and centrifugal blowers, pumps, heat exchangers, instrumentation, variable-frequency drives, and related systems.

Matt served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Cavalry Scout and Military Policeman. That experience helped strengthen his leadership, teamwork, discipline, and adaptability—qualities he brings to the classroom and to his work with students. Matt is passionate about helping students build practical skills and confidence as they prepare for careers in process instrumentation and control.
