GANSEVOORT, N.Y. —Penn State Berks student and men's basketball player Latrell Carroll was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Rookie of the Year and was joined by teammate Matt Seip on the All-NEAC Third Team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon.
Carroll is just the second member in program history to earn Rookie of the Year honors, joining Dameon Nixon who received the award in the 2012-13 season. Carroll and Seip earning third team recognition marks the first time the Nittany Lions had a pair of teammates named to all-conference teams since the 2013-14 season (Tom Smith, second team; Darren Major, third team).
Carroll turned in a spectacular debut season for the Nittany Lions. The freshman forward ranked second in the NEAC in total rebounds (246) and rebounds per game (11.2), while ranking third in the conference for points per game (19.3), field goals made (167) and fourth in field goal percentage (59.2 percent) during the regular season. Carroll also ranked among the top-10 in the NEAC in points (424) and blocks (23). Carroll recorded a double-double in 15 of the 22 contests that he played in this season. He scored 10 or more points in 19 contests and had 20 or more points on 12 occasions. Carroll had 10 rebounds in 16 games and had 15 or more five times.
Seip turned in a strong year in his final season with the Nittany Lions. The senior forward averaged 18.0 points per game, which ranked fifth in the NEAC during the regular season. Seip's 433 points scored this season are the sixth most in the conference, while his 169 field goals made are second best in the NEAC. In addition, Seip averaged 6.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 0.8 assists per game. He shot 43.2 percent (169-of-391) from the floor, 32.2 percent (39-of-121) from 3-point range, and 77.8 percent (56-for-72) from the free throw line. Seip recorded 10 or more points in 21 of the 22 contests he played in this season. He tallied 20 or more points in 11 contests, including a pair of games with a career-high 31 points. Seip was named the NEAC Player of the Week one time this season.
The duo placed themselves among the top performers in a single-season in program history. Carroll set the single-season school record with his 59.2 percent field goal percentage (167-of-282) and finished with the second most rebounds in a season (246). He made the third most free throws in a season with 83, while his 19.3 scoring average is the fourth highest ever and his 167 field goals made are tied for fifth best. Seip played the second most minutes in a season (835) and averaged the second most minutes per game (34.8) at Berks. He finished with the third most field goals in a season (169). Additionally, Seip ranked in the top-10 for scoring average and free throw percentage. The duo both finished in the top-10 all-time for points scored, with Seip ranking sixth (433) and Carroll ranking eighth (424).
