Camp Noah takes students to Sandy Hook

Penn State Berks students, under the guidance of Dr. Jayne Leh, Assistant Professor of Special Education, and Pastor David Hershey, campus minister, are offering support to children affected by the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012 through Camp Noah. The camp runs from July 15-July 19, 2013. The Penn State Berks group will depart on July 13, in order to get acquainted with the community and learn the stories of the families so they can serve the children more effectively.

Newnham Creates Three Trustee Scholarships

Dr. Randall Newnham and his wife have created three Trustee Scholarships for Penn State Berks students, two of which honor the professor's parents who were dedicated Penn Staters. With a gift of $150,000, Dr. Randall Newnham and his wife, Dr. Janet Graden, have created the Robert E. Newnham Memorial Trustee Scholarship, the Patricia F. Newnham Memorial Trustee Scholarship, and the Randall E. Newnham Trustee Scholarship to benefit Penn State Berks students with financial need.

High school students invited to spend a summer morning on campus

High school students who will be seniors this fall and their families are encouraged to attend the Penn State Berks Spend a Summer Morning program, on Saturday, July 27, 2013, beginning at 9 a.m. Information will be provided to students who are considering admission for the fall of 2014. Topics such as admissions, financial aid, academics, student activities, and athletics will be discussed.

Five of Penn State Berks community selected for Faces of Penn State campaign

Five members of the Penn State Berks campus community have been selected to be part of the University's "Faces of Penn State" campaign. Dr. David Aurentz, Gregory F. Flemming, Amanda González-Ortiz, Dr. C. Preston Scoboria, and Jeff Wike have each made their own unique contributions to improving the world through their inspiring teaching, research, and community outreach.

Penn State Berks Professor Lends Agronomic Expertise to U.S. Open

Dr. Mike Fidanza, Professor of Plant and Soil Sciences at Penn State Berks, is lending his agronomic expertise this week at the U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA from June 13-16, 2013, along with two other Penn State faculty members from University Park campus (Dr. John Kaminski, Associate Professor of Turfgrass Science, and Dr. Andy McNitt, Professor of Soil Science).

Pumariega, DelVecchio, Bingham and Brendel named First-Year Advocates

As part of Penn State Berks' commitment to helping incoming students make a smooth transition from high school to college, the college has placed a strong emphasis on first-year experience. To that end, each year one member of the Penn State Berks faculty and staff, and one or more members of the student body are named first-year advocates.

Wojciechowski receives Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Award

Alexa Wojciechowski, Coordinator of Placement and Internships at Penn State Berks, has been honored with the 2013 Hendrick Award for Best Practices for Adult Learners in the category of career advice and support. The award was presented by the Penn State Commission for Adult Learners at the 2013 Hendrick Conference, held at Penn State Harrisburg on May 9, 2013.

Accelerated Business Information Session slated for June 25

Penn State Berks will hold an information session for its Accelerated Business degree program on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. in room 109, Franco Building. Attendees will learn more about how to complete 60+ business credits toward the bachelor's degree in Business in a 20-month, accelerated Saturday program.

Faculty and staff recognized for excellence

Faculty member recognized for teaching excellence Dr. Maureen Dunbar, associate professor of biology, was awarded the Outstanding Full-Time Teacher Award. Dunbar teaches various levels of biology courses. The committee cited Dunbar's breadth of courses taught, her thoughtful statement of teaching philosophy, her scholarship in teaching and learning, her commitment to and engagement with students inside and outside the classroom, and evaluations by her students.
