Penn State Laureate to discuss history of the Beatles

Penn State Laureate Kenneth Womack will share insights into the history of the Beatles through a multimedia presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Room 121 in the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building at Penn State Berks. The event is free and open to the public.

College hosts Global Cinema Series

This spring, as part of the Global Studies degree program's "Global Oscar Comes to Berks," Penn State Berks will present four films nominated for the 2013 Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards: Kon-Tiki on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014; War Witch on Thursday, Feb. 20; Amour on Thursday, March 20; and No, on Thursday, April 24; all at 6 p.m. in room 121 of the Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building. All four films are free and open to the public.

College hosts Martin Luther King Day banquet on Jan. 30

Penn State Berks will host a banquet in honor of Martin Luther King on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014. The event will be held in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room; doors open at 6 p.m., with a soul food dinner at 6:30. The keynote speaker is Joe Webb, Director of Student Support Services at Penn State Berks, who will share a unique presentation with the attendees. In addition, there will be several performances and awards will be presented to students who have demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and efforts towards social justice.

Professor sheds light on groundhog’s shadowy behavior

Zervanos and colleagues develop new theory on hibernation patterns Residents of Pennsylvania look to the groundhog each February 2 to forecast the weather. According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; if not, an early spring is predicted. However most people don't understand the real reason groundhogs emerge when they do, according to Dr. Stam Zervanos, Emeritus Professor of Biology at Penn State Berks.

Lecture explores impact of horror films on culture

Dr. Kendall Phillips, Professor of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Syracuse University, will present a lecture titled "Past, Present, Future Undead: George A. Romero's Legacy of Horror" on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Renee Yohe to speak at upcoming Mental Health Fair

As part of the Penn State Berks Mental Health Fair and the Arts and Lecture Series, author and inspiration for TWLOHA, To Write Love on Her Arms, Renee Yohe will discuss her battle with mental health issues on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at 7:30 p.m., in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Reading Royals night to benefit THON

The Berks County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, the Penn State Berks THON student group, and the Reading Royals are teaming up for the fourth consecutive year to hold a fundraising event to benefit THON, the world's largest student-run philanthropy dedicated to supporting children with pediatric cancer and their families, on Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Santander Arena in Reading.

Berks Degree Fair promotes academic programs

Penn State Berks will hold a Degree Fair for currently enrolled students on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Tully's. Students attending the fair will receive a coupon for a free lunch on the day they attend. The fair will showcase the college's baccalaureate degree programs. Each degree program will have a display table of information, and faculty and current students enrolled in the major will be available to discuss the various aspects of the degree program and answer students' questions.
