Michael Fidanza, professor of plant and soil science at Penn State Berks, shared his knowledge and passion for plants and soil with fourth-graders from Caln Elementary School during the First Green program at Coatesville County Club on May 7. The children spent the day on a golf course, learning about STEM-related topics, such as how to measure the surface area of a putting green by calculating the area of a polygon. At Fidanza’s station, they learned about the biology of the soil and about plant roots. Fidanza participates in this program once in the fall and once in the spring at various golf courses in the region. Founded in 1997, First Green is the only STEM education and environmental outreach program in the United States and Canada that uses golf courses as learning labs. First Green, a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America program, pairs golf courses with local schools for unique STEM learning opportunities.
