Student group to receive Community Impact Youth Award from NAACP

The Penn State Berks student group that works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness throughout the year for THON, "Berks benefitting THON," will receive the NAACP-Reading Branch's Community Impact Youth Award at their Freedom Fund Gala on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading.

Student completes NSF Research Experience, receives recognition

Penn State Berks Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major Launick Saint-Fort completed a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University at Buffalo-SUNY in August 2015. Her research, titled "The Separation of Photo-luminescent Carbon Dots via Capillary Electrophoresis Coupled to Laser Induced Fluorescence Detection," was recognized as the best poster presentation.

FBI pioneer of criminal profiling John Douglas visits college

John Douglas, a former special agent with the FBI and author of many books including Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, will visit Penn State Berks on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at 7 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This event is sponsored by the Penn State Berks Criminal Justice program and is part of a student research experience.

Whitaker certified as Developmental Education Specialist from Kellogg Institute

Keysha Whitaker, lecturer in English and Professional Writing at Penn State Berks, has recently received certification as a Developmental Education Specialist from the Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators. Whitaker was one of 25 educators selected from across the United States to participate in the Kellogg Institute and its certification process during the 2014 academic year.

Penn State Berks students will be "lending their paws for a good cause" as they volunteer at a variety of nonprofit organizations during the academic year. The following is a list of community service initiatives in September and October 2015.

“What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20” guides students facing life transitions

Students facing major life transitions, such as leaving the protected environment of home or school, have a lot of decisions to make. It can scary to face these choices, knowing that no one is going to tell you whether or not you are making the right ones. Tina Seelig, entrepreneur, neuroscientist, popular teacher, and author of What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20, will present a lecture on this topic on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium.

Theatre Department presents “The Siren Song of Stephen Jay Gould”

The Penn State Berks Department of Theatre will present The Siren Song of Stephen Jay Gould, a student-directed workshop production by Benjamin Bettenbender, on October 13, 15, and 16, 2015, at 8 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. Admission is free, and donations to the Theatre Department will be accepted.
