The next Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Colloquium will include two presentations: "Embracing Commonplace: Creating Ground for a Life of Rhetorically Engaged Civic Action" by Dr. Jill Burk, Instructor of Communication Arts and Sciences, and "Hiding in Closets: Troubling Identity in Medical Humanities Research" by Dr. Holly Ryan, Assistant Professor of English. It will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, from 1:00-2:20 p.m. in room 104 of the Franco Building.
Penn State Berks will hold two events to raise awareness of contemporary issues surrounding the LGBTA community: the Noise event on April 17, 2014, and Day of Silence on April 18. Both events are open to students, faculty, and staff of the college.
The Sundance Institute is coming to Berks County in April, and Penn State Berks alumnus Ben Sneeringer, an American Studies major with an interest in film who once worked at the Exeter Community library, will moderate discussions held after each presentation.
The Exeter Community Library is one of 21 in Pennsylvania that is participating in the "Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialogue" program that seeks to engage in communication through documentary and narrative film with other cultures.
Two math faculty members from Penn State Berks, along with staff members from the Center for Learning & Teaching (CLT), shared details of their team project at a regional event held on March 28, 2014, at Penn State Lehigh Valley titled Teaching and Learning with Technology 101. The workshop was attended by faculty and staff from University Park and the eastern campuses who share an interest in innovation in teaching and learning.
Detective Corporal Pasquale Leporace from the Berks County District Attorney's Office and Penn State Berks Police Chief Kevin Rudy will give a presentation titled "Heroin - It's Long, Deadly, Reach" on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 1 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public, and it is highly relevant for anyone working with youth.

Penn State Berks Student Veteran Organization is teaming with the Student Veterans of America to host its first annual "ROY G. BIV Memorial Run." The 5K paint run and 1-mile walk will benefit the Penn State Berks Student Veteran Organization. The term memorial run is used to recognize fallen soldiers. The event will be held on Sunday, April 13th, 2014, at 10 a.m. Rain date is Sunday, April 27th, 2014. Race-day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Beaver Community Center.
Penn State Berks students received recognition at the University Scholastic Awards Ceremony held on April 3, 2014, in the Multipurpose Room of the Perkins Student Center. The awards presented included the President's Freshman Award, the President Sparks Award, and the Evan Pugh Scholars Award.
The Penn State Berks Feministic Club will hold a "Take Back the Night" event on Monday, April 7, 2014. There will be a rally and march beginning at 1 p.m. at the Franco Amphitheater, followed by presentations in the evening beginning at 6 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. The keynote speaker is Katie Koestner, who was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1991 when she became the first woman to speak publicly about date rape. This event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Jessica Schocker, assistant professor of social studies education and women's studies at Penn State Berks, was one of six Penn State faculty members to receive the 2014 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award, named after Penn State's seventh president, honors excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
The Penn State University Office of Global Programs will present a program on study abroad opportunities for current students on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 1 p.m. in room 5 of the Luerssen Building. This program is for current students, and light refreshments will be served.
