Yaya Barry

Barry takes road less traveled

When Yaya Barry graduates on Saturday, May 7, 2016, it will be the realization of his dream and the culmination of a long journey for him and his family who moved from Guinea to the United States in 2004. When they arrived in Philadelphia, Barry did not know any English. In just 12 years, he was able to not only learn the language, but to earn a B.S. in Accounting and a full-time internship at Ernst & Young as an auditor.

Gibateh overcomes adversity to graduate… and inspire

Foday Gibateh always dreamed of attending Penn State Berks since he visited the college for a tour. At the time, the high school soccer player was on track to attend college in a few months when a Sunday morning trip to IHOP with friends changed his life forever. He was involved in an automobile accident that left him paralyzed and in the hospital for six long months. So you might assume that he abandoned his dreams … and you would be wrong.

Research opens door to doctorate program for Leets

Katelyn Leets will earn her B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology on Saturday, May 7, 2016. But she won't be taking time for rest and relaxation after graduation. She will travel to Austria to continue work on her National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) through the University at Syracuse-SUNY. After completing the REU, she will begin the Ph.D. program in Chemistry the University at Syracuse-SUNY.

Plans to return to Haiti to work on water purification projects It has been a long and winding road from Haiti to graduation for Launick Saint-Fort, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. She came to the United States with her family when she was just eleven years old, and worked for a few years before enrolling in Penn State Berks.

College partners with allergy practice to show patients what allergies look like

You can feel it in the air every spring and fall when it's "allergy season" in Berks County: the sneezing and running nose, the itchy, watery eyes. But did you ever wonder what your allergies look like? It may soon be possible to actually see your allergies-or rather, the pollen and mold that cause an allergic reaction in some individuals, through a partnership between Penn State Berks and Berkshire Allergy & Asthma Center.

Nine adult students inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda

Nine adult students at Penn State Berks-including two staff members-were recently inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for adult students in continuing higher education. The Society is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and the recognition of high scholastic achievement in an adult student's career. Students must have a 3.2 GPA to qualify, and all the Penn State Berks inductees had GPAs above a 3.5.

Students build speaker system amplifiers

Penn State Berks held its fifth annual Build Your Own Amplifier Exhibition and Demonstration on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. This year's winner was John Katz, an Electro-Mechanical Engineering major, for his amplifier titled 'Victor Audio Model I.' The demonstration showcased the one-of-a-kind audio amplifiers that were built by twelve Penn State Berks students. This annual event is organized by Dr. Shiyoung Lee, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering.

Scanlon receives one of Lehigh Valley LaunchBox’s first grants

Voices Renewed software program to help individuals with dementia Marietta Scanlon, Lecturer of Engineering at Penn State Berks and formerly Penn State Lehigh Valley, received one of Lehigh Valley's first LaunchBox grants for her team's software program Voices Renewed, which enhances the life story collection method process for individuals with dementia and Alzheimers. Team members included Lehigh Valley students Mahdi Chaker and Michael Cimerola.

Athletics banquet recognizes record number of scholar-athletes

A record number of 111 Penn State Berks "scholar-athletes," student-athletes with GPAs of 3.0 and above, were recognized at the Penn State Berks Athletics Banquet on Monday, April 25, 2016, in the Beaver Community Center. In order to be recognized for the award, the student-athletes needed a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The 2015-16 academic year saw a record number of 111 recipients receive scholar-athlete honors.
