Nine adult students inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda

Nine adult students at Penn State Berks-including two staff members-were recently inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for adult students in continuing higher education. The Society is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and the recognition of high scholastic achievement in an adult student's career. Students must have a 3.2 GPA to qualify, and all the Penn State Berks inductees had GPAs above a 3.5.

Scanlon receives one of Lehigh Valley LaunchBox’s first grants

Voices Renewed software program to help individuals with dementia Marietta Scanlon, Lecturer of Engineering at Penn State Berks and formerly Penn State Lehigh Valley, received one of Lehigh Valley's first LaunchBox grants for her team's software program Voices Renewed, which enhances the life story collection method process for individuals with dementia and Alzheimers. Team members included Lehigh Valley students Mahdi Chaker and Michael Cimerola.

Athletics banquet recognizes record number of scholar-athletes

A record number of 111 Penn State Berks "scholar-athletes," student-athletes with GPAs of 3.0 and above, were recognized at the Penn State Berks Athletics Banquet on Monday, April 25, 2016, in the Beaver Community Center. In order to be recognized for the award, the student-athletes needed a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The 2015-16 academic year saw a record number of 111 recipients receive scholar-athlete honors.

Students build speaker system amplifiers

Penn State Berks held its fifth annual Build Your Own Amplifier Exhibition and Demonstration on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. This year's winner was John Katz, an Electro-Mechanical Engineering major, for his amplifier titled 'Victor Audio Model I.' The demonstration showcased the one-of-a-kind audio amplifiers that were built by twelve Penn State Berks students. This annual event is organized by Dr. Shiyoung Lee, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering.

Berks bees subject of student’s independent study

During the month of April, Science major Cassandra Darnell can be found setting up her honey bee boxes at Penn State Berks. For Darnell, the boxes are part of her ongoing independent study she is completing as part of her degree on the bees of Berks campus. The bees will also provide benefits to the campus as pollinators.

Schreyer Scholars receive medals at the Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony

Eight members of the Penn State Berks graduating class received their Schreyer Honors Medals at the Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony held on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Awardees included Denise Castro, Tye A. Morales, Margaret M. Neiman, Chastity N. Paredes-Rodriguez, Brittney Romanowski, Launick Saint-Fort, Cassidy N. Schultz, and Megan E. Timberman. Medals are awarded for completing all of the requirements of the Schreyer Honors College, including a capstone Honors thesis.

Careers with Math Options ignites female 7th graders interest in STEM

Penn State Berks will host its 18th annual Careers with Math Options Conference on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, for female 7th grade students from Berks County and surrounding school districts. The conference will feature speakers from Penn State Berks and the community. A wide variety of engaging and interactive workshops will be provided to encourage the young women to continue their studies in math, science, engineering, technology, finance, and related fields.

Penn State Berks summer sessions begin May 16

The summer sessions at Penn State Berks begins on May 16, 2016. There will be more than 60 classes offered in the two summer sessions, with the first six-week session running from May 16-June 23, and the second seven-week session running from June 27-August 4. Courses will be offered in a variety of disciplines including accounting, chemistry, information systems, math, business, English, communications, psychology, Spanish, and many others.

College community to help revitalize Schuylkill River Trail on April 23

Members of the Penn State Berks campus community will join other community organizations on the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT) as part of the City of Reading's participation in the Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition, Berks students in service learning courses will lead activities during the event.
