Maximize your tutoring appointment
- Plan for appointments: Avoid waiting until the last minute to request tutoring services. The Learning Center tends to be busier during midterms and finals, so plan accordingly. Consistency is key—schedule your appointments early and attend regularly for the best results.
- Prepare in advance: Identify key topics and determine which concepts or assignments you need the most help with. Make a list of specific questions or problems and bring all relevant materials to your appointments.
- Arrive early: Arrive a few minutes early to organize your materials and outline what you want to cover during the session.
- Communicate clearly: State your goals and let the tutor know what you aim to achieve during the session. Be clear about what you don’t understand or where you need assistance and ask specific questions. Avoid disclosing or discussing non-academic or irrelevant information during your tutoring sessions.
- Be actively engaged: Participate actively in the process by working through problems or concepts with the tutor. Don’t assume that tutors will do your work for you or provide answers without involving you in the learning process. Take notes and write down important points, strategies, and explanations provided by the tutor.
- Clarify understanding: Request additional examples or explanations if you're unsure about a concept. Ask for clarifications and summarize key points by repeating what you’ve learned to ensure you understand the material correctly.
- Set goals: Before leaving your appointment, outline your next steps. Discuss and plan what you need to focus on next and how to address any remaining questions or issues. Utilize faculty office hours to ensure you’re on the right track and to clarify any lingering questions.
- Be open to feedback: Accept suggestions and listen to the tutor’s advice. Be open to new study techniques or strategies and consider how you can apply the feedback to improve your future work.
- Follow-up: Review the material by revisiting what was discussed during the session on your own time. Schedule additional sessions to address ongoing challenges or to deepen your understanding.
To make the most out of your tutoring session, it's essential to come prepared, stay engaged, and actively collaborate with your tutor to address your specific academic needs and goals.
