Graduate school seminar slated for Oct. 29

Students interested in learning more about applying to graduate school are invited to attend a seminar presented by the Office of Career Services on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at 1 p.m. in room 3 (the forum room) of the Perkins Student Center. This event is free and open to all Penn State Berks students. Attendees will learn about the application process and tips on selecting a school, and receive a timetable/checklist for graduate school planning. Writing Center seeks student essays for “Berks Believes” anthology

In honor of the National Day on Writing, the Penn State Berks Writing Center, in collaboration with First-Year Seminar and the Learning Center, is soliciting student submissions for an in-house publication of Berks Believes, an anthology of student-written essays that follow in the tradition of the This I Believe essay made famous by the 1950s radio show by the same name. In these short stories, authors write a 500-600 word essay that captures a specific personal believe or value.

Sanford honored for 25 years of service to Penn State Berks

Dr. David Sanford, Associate Professor of Horticulture, was recently honored for 25 years of service to Penn State Berks. During that time, he has seen many changes at the campus but the one thing that has not changed is his love for teaching. "It's one of the reasons I came to Penn State Berks," states Sanford. "I enjoy teaching and interacting with the students. It's what gets me up in the morning."

STANDARDIZED Lies, Money & Civil Rights: How Testing Is Ruining Public Education

Penn State Berks will hold a screening of the documentary STANDARDIZED Lies, Money & Civil Rights: How Testing Is Ruining Public Education on Monday, October 13, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium in conjunction with this year's Common Reading selection, This I Believe. Dan Hornberger, producer of the film, will be leading the discussion. A question-and-answer session will take place immediately after the film. This presentation is free and open to the public.

Penn State Berks receives “Military Friendly” designation

Penn State Berks was recently awarded "military friendly" designation due to its commitment to serving veterans. The college received the designation of 2015 Military Friendly® School from Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. "We are so pleased that Penn State Berks has been designated a 'military friendly campus' and that more veterans are choosing to enroll in our degree programs," comments Penn State Berks Chancellor R. Keith Hillkirk.

Students turn emergency shelter into five-star restaurant on Oct. 13

Penn State Berks students will turn Opportunity House, the Reading emergency shelter, into a five-star restaurant for its clients on the evening of Monday, October 13, 2014. With the help of Mariel Alburquerque, head chef from the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading, students will serve Opportunity House clients a four-course meal and an evening to remember.

Turf Athletic Field Dedication kicks off Parents and Homecoming Weekend

Penn State Berks will hold a brief dedication ceremony for its new artificial turf athletic field as part of the opening ceremonies for Parents and Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. The artificial turf athletic field is located behind the Beaver Community Center. This event is free and open to the public, and attendees are invited to attend the Parents and Homecoming Weekend lunch under the tent on the Perkins Plaza.

Penn State Berks observes National Coming Out Day

The Office of Multicultural Programs will hold a workshop about what it's like to "come out" in honor of National Coming Out Day. The workshop will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, at 1:15 p.m. in room 3 of the Perkins Student Center. In addition, information will be available in the Perkins first floor lobby from 12-2:30 p.m. This program is free and open to the Berks campus community.
