HASS Colloquium slated for Oct. 29

The upcoming Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Colloquium will feature two separate presentations: one titled "Using Technology To Cultivate the Summer Reading Behaviors of Developing Young Adolescent Readers" and another titled "Jim Crow Harlem in Blue: Race, Class, Policing and Long Civil Rights Movement New York City, 1969-1971." The colloquium will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014, from 1:00-2:20 p.m. in room 105 of the Franco Building.

Penn State Berks holds inaugural TEDxPSUBerks event

Penn State Berks will host its inaugural TEDxPSUBerks event, on its campus Friday, November 14, 2014, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. Organized by the Penn State Berks Student Veterans Organization, their goal is to create a memorable experience to connect and bring diverse disciplines and backgrounds together around new ideas, focusing on the theme "Love and Education."

Students volunteer at Vision Resource Center

Penn State Berks Applied Psychology seniors will be completing their community service project at the Vision Resource Center of Berks County's 3rd Annual Harvest Fest at the Vision Resource Center, 2020 Hampden Boulevard in Reading, on Saturday, October 18, 2014, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Graduate school seminar slated for Oct. 29

Students interested in learning more about applying to graduate school are invited to attend a seminar presented by the Office of Career Services on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at 1 p.m. in room 3 (the forum room) of the Perkins Student Center. This event is free and open to all Penn State Berks students. Attendees will learn about the application process and tips on selecting a school, and receive a timetable/checklist for graduate school planning. Writing Center seeks student essays for “Berks Believes” anthology

In honor of the National Day on Writing, the Penn State Berks Writing Center, in collaboration with First-Year Seminar and the Learning Center, is soliciting student submissions for an in-house publication of Berks Believes, an anthology of student-written essays that follow in the tradition of the This I Believe essay made famous by the 1950s radio show by the same name. In these short stories, authors write a 500-600 word essay that captures a specific personal believe or value.

Sanford honored for 25 years of service to Penn State Berks

Dr. David Sanford, Associate Professor of Horticulture, was recently honored for 25 years of service to Penn State Berks. During that time, he has seen many changes at the campus but the one thing that has not changed is his love for teaching. "It's one of the reasons I came to Penn State Berks," states Sanford. "I enjoy teaching and interacting with the students. It's what gets me up in the morning."

STANDARDIZED Lies, Money & Civil Rights: How Testing Is Ruining Public Education

Penn State Berks will hold a screening of the documentary STANDARDIZED Lies, Money & Civil Rights: How Testing Is Ruining Public Education on Monday, October 13, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium in conjunction with this year's Common Reading selection, This I Believe. Dan Hornberger, producer of the film, will be leading the discussion. A question-and-answer session will take place immediately after the film. This presentation is free and open to the public.
